작가노트

묵화墨畵란 기예技藝다. 기技가 극진한 상태에 이를 때 비로소 그림이 신통력神通力을 보여 마음을 움직이는 예술이란 뜻이다. 하지만 요즘세상, 묵화가 고도의 숙련을 바탕으로 한 기技의 예술이라고 하는 사실을 애써 외면하여 짐짓 스스로 무슨 사상가인체 머리로만 그림을 그리려는 화가들이 있는데, 이는 매우 부질없고 잘못된 생각이다. 삶이란 살고, 살고, 살아갈 때 우환이 엷어지는 것처럼, 그림이란 그리고, 그리고, 그릴 때 비로소 만법으로부터 자유로워질 수 있는 것이다. 붓을 잡는 순간 화가는 일체의 잡상을 버려야 할 것이다. 

세상만사 지필묵을 다루는 수묵화처럼 예측 불허한 상태에서는 정답이 없다. 합리적 해결책이 없다는 얘기다. 정답이 없기에 秘方을 찾아 헤매게 되는 데, 비방이란 말로 설명할 수 없는 천지신명과 단독자인 화가와의 소통이다. 그림이 감상자로부터 공감을 끌어내지 못하는 까닭은 화가가 비방을 얻지 못했기 때문이다.

Artist's note

Black-and-white painting is a handicraft, which means when the technique reaches a sublime state, the painting at last exercises its occult power, moving the minds of people. And yet, there are some artists today who try to look away from the fact that black-and-white painting is an art of technique based on high level of skills and work hard to draw with their head as if they were some kinds of thinkers, which is wrong as well as useless. Just as worries in life fade away when we live our life to the full, painting can become free from all limitations when the painter paint, paint and paint. The moment a painter holds a brush, he/she has to dump all distracting thoughts.
