Resonance beyond an instant_artist note
Resonance beyond an instant

Based on ideas that come from moments of everyday repetition,
Through time spent at work, in that moment, a masterpiece appears.
The remnants of our heartfelt emotions resonate for a long time,
Lingering in the art work.

For an artist, inspiration glitters briefly in the dark
and soon disappears like a small ember.  Just an instant.
Therefore, art is a twinkling ember blowing life into an immortal flame, consuming all.
 - among the artist's notes -

01. 그 안에서 보다
Seeing within
If there is a beauty of the object seen from the outside,
it is natural to say that there is beauty inside the object, too.
Utilizing the spreading effect of the color and contrast of Chinese ink,
this work expresses the trunks, branches, and leaves of willow.

02. 움틈
Birth of life
The universe and all things in nature continuously live and breathe without a moment of rest. Even in the midst of the harsh and desolate winter where everything freezes, there exists energy of life waiting for a warm spring just as the providence of the universe continues to revolve around.

The traces of coarse and dark brush strokes of turning and twisting represent the providence of cosmic nature.
The red dots within them represent the source of life force.
The source of the vitality sprouts in the great providence of cosmic nature.

It is indeed 'birth of life.'

03. 꺼먹소
Black Bull

This piece expresses an angry black bull
ready to run against the opponent to fight.
With a brush made of rough and stiff fur,
this piece represents the moment of black bull
kicking the ground with foaming at the mouth.

The appearance of black bull is
represented by a reverse ladder shape
which doubles the impression of aggression.

04. 합일(合一)
 Harmony

Sounds of nature such as birds, water, the wind
are mixing up with the happiness, anger, love, and joy
  of human beings.
In the end, it is the sound that sublimates music into art.

The sound of being harmonized with nature and human being, I wonder if it will be heard in this painting.

05. 자연일우(自然一遇)
Nature as one

In the clear autumn sky, white birds fly here and there like clouds.
In a clear pond filled with the reflected sky,
white and red lotus flowers and round shaped lotus leaves
   are floating.

The beautiful fishes play hide-and-seek in silence.
Looking a small kingfisher, I forgot all worries for a while.

06. 문득, 새소리를 듣다
Suddenly, hear the birds

All of a sudden, I come to realize that the birdsong sounds beautiful and pure although I have been hearing the birds singing on the trees of the street corner.

The feeling of beauty that is gained or realized at the instant is awakening. Unexpectedly, the moment of feeling and realizing something new may come only after permeating it into body and mind for many years. Suddenly, I wish to hear another birdsong.

07. 먼지는
Dust is

Dust is not a symbol of dirt, but a humble remnant of intense life, and the cosmic mother home that someday one has to return to.

At the moment of unfolding a Chinese drawing paper, minute clouds of dust dance with the air in the sunshine through the window.

Dust, dirt
They are little, useless, dirty and annoying substances.

Are they really?
No.
Thanks to those cosmic dust and dirt,
the word "matter" comes into existence.
This has been created from nothing,
being the source of innumerable lives.
They serve the fundamental root where the vast and boundless universal principle operates.

Often times, we neglect such small and insignificant things.
However, in retrospect, there is nothing unnecessary in the mother nature.
I come to realize that many tiny, intangible objects, or beings that are invisible or unfelt are a precious part of the mother nature, which should not be forgotten.

08. 관조
Calm view
I see you,
do you see me?

09. 마음 내려놓기
 Mind at rest

Like a billowing wave without rest, life continues with lots of sufferings and agonies.
Let’s put down my mind at rest for a while
to comfort my suffered body and mind.

I draw a lot of waves until capillary in my eyes almost burst.
Beneath the waves, I draw white empty space and a naked soul who is free from everything.
Lying in one small boat with eyes closed.

10. 수인의 양식
Prisoner’s food

This piece based on the poetry called 'a prisoner’s food,' written by Vietnam’s national hero, Ho Chi Minh.

The dark screen has sympathized with the situation of Ho Chi Minh. A blue table expresses the will of overcoming the gloomy atmosphere of prison, and red rice shows Ho Chi Minh's enthusiasm for political ideals.

The white plum flower means constancy and fidelity.
Shadow in the middle indicates that restraint is not eternal but a moment. Overall, this piece implies the firm will of a man who is continually trying to pursue the ideal world.

11. 무위자연(無爲自然ᆢ)
Nature as it is

Nature as it is, never be intact.
Nature as it is without man-made touch,
or an attitude that does not violate nature.
In other words, it is natural life rather than secular life.

The vigorous aura around beautiful mountains and rivers
is expressed in a rough and concise stroke.

I drew this piece with a heart wishing the beautiful appearance of ancient forever.

12. 샛달과 매화향
 Moon and plum flower

The bright moon rises without trace
and fragrance permeates in silence.

Nature, as it is as ever,
always revolves and turns around without stopping.
The bright moon rises in the quiet night
and the delicate fragrance of plum flower
that diffuses even in the unfrequented place.

13. 밀어(密語)
A Secret Talk

A Secret talk.
It's a sweet whisper.

In our world, we communicate through conversations.
Sometimes people say sweet words
to persuade others or themselves.

On the other hand, there exists a tight tension as well.
Between in willow,
birds and fishes that live on different boundaries of heaven and water are concealing their real intentions and luring with sweet words to attract.

Whether we recognize or not,
we encounter situations like this all the time.
For one’s purposes,
people try to persuade others with sweet words.
On the contrary, people persuade themselves, too.
In other words,
the two minds within oneself persuade each other.

Even within me, I am often being shaken and weighing by myself between the boundaries.

'Should I cross this line or leave it as it is?'
'I can go over the boundary because of thus and thus.'
'Stop it. Otherwise, thus and thus may happen.'

14. 한가롬
Leisure

At dusk,
breeze makes billowing waves along the waterside.
A few baby fishes
colored with red by the setting sun,
play among nameless water plants.
