Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and one of the most important figures in the development of abstract art during the 20th century. He was born on March 7, 1872, in Amersfoort, Netherlands.

Mondrian's early artistic style was influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. However, over the years, he gradually moved towards abstraction, seeking to simplify and distill the essence of his subjects. He co-founded the De Stijl movement, which sought to create a new form of artistic expression through pure abstraction and simplicity.

In his early career, Mondrian painted landscapes and traditional subjects, but he became increasingly interested in the dynamic balance between color and form. He was particularly inspired by the cityscape of Paris, where he lived for several years, and the rhythm and energy of urban life influenced his artistic vision.

During his time in Paris, Mondrian encountered Cubism, which had a profound impact on his artistic development. He started using horizontal and vertical lines and primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) in combination with black, white, and gray.

His paintings were characterized by geometric grids of straight lines intersecting with rectangular planes of primary colors. However, he passed away in New York on February 1, 1944, before witnessing the full impact of his influence on the development of modern art.
