Melting the joy, love, pain and missing into paintings Artist Hwang Doo-soon paints landscape, portrait and still life with a particular attention to flowers. Hwang habitually think about things and life carefully and makes a regular travel to find inspiration. Hwang sees nature as it is but is cautious about sumptuous colors. Korean landscape painter Kim Seo-bong (deceased) said “She is silent but gives enormous concentration once engaged in a work.” Art critic Shin Hang-sup said “Visual joy seems trivial to Hwang but realism does. The colors are calm and the images have power to move the viewers. This is because she pours herself as who she is into her works.” In an effort to find a new challenge, however, Hwang shifted forms of objects to formless of objects. Art critic Park Myeong-in said “This shapeless can mean solemnity and mystique. It can be interpreted as a metaphoric space where the trace of her life resides. In other words, it must be the profound territory of the artist.” We might carefully assume this formless tendency of the artist from the unfortunate and traumatic incident; she lost her son to the other world. She might felt the world was collapsed. But her only choice was to bury her son into her heart and express the sadness onto the canvas instead. From 2010, she indulged herself into flowers as shown her works: blue hydrangea on red background, orange tulip on yellowish green and red rose on yellow. Color for Hwang is a language to share her feelings with others and a tool to heal the wound. Many of those who have appreciated her works said commonly “They are like Gogh’s” or “It is not a well-drawn painting but it touches”. Gauguin raises up her dead daughter in his work We? Where Are We Going?>; we might find the same desperateness at Hwang’s work and it makes our heart grieved. “Art for me is a penance” confesses Hwang. Gathering her works, Hwang is holding an invitational solo exhibition at Seogyeong Gallery in Jongno, Seoul from May 25 to June 8. Art critic Park Myeong-in said “Overcoming the pain, moderation, truthfulness and obsession in art are melted in Hwang’s works.” Hwang has joined a number of art fairs and exhibitions home and abroad and it is notable that all four works were sold at an exhibition held in Beijing China. If you are interested in art, why don’t you fill up your artistic desire at her exhibition this spring in Jongno? |

This adolescence of forms in Hwang Doo Soon | |
This adolescence of forms in Hwang Doo Soon had the intention of a surrealistic solemn beauty or mystique, the deepest, the most important, the trajectory that cannot be erased from one's life, a space where the integral territory lies in the metaphor. In reality, emphasizing space in artistic creation is not entirely bad. Because it is an element by which beauty is scattered in diverse forms. It is undoubtedly the most serious territory. In this regard, Whang Doo Soon says "it is good to let the significance of her art go out in the real world but a psychological impulse to adolescent significance of the paintings was activated." (Art Critic, Pak Myeong In)
